Nashville Buddhist Meditation Group

Our Practice

Our weekly Monday meetings begin with a group metta (lovingkindness) practice. Metta is a strong wish for the happiness and wellbeing of ourselves and others. By doing this practice consistently, we begin to access and generate universal lovingkindness and compassion. After five minutes of silent metta practice, we transition into 25 minutes of silent meditation. Newcomers are taught a basic breath awareness practice that is used in many Buddhist traditions to help concentrate the mind and bring awareness into the present moment. We then observe five minutes of silent walking practice followed by another 25 minutes of meditation. After completing the meditation practice, we do a short chant. Finally, a teacher or practice leader gives a dharma talk and leads a group discussion. The discussions are often based on readings disseminated through our weekly email newsletter. You can access these articles through our blog or sign up to receive our weekly newsletter. You'll find a sign up link on the home page of this website. We also have bi-weekly meetings on Saturdays, and various classes and meetings on Thursdays. For information about our full schedule, click on the practice schedule tab to the left.

Diamond Sutra

So you should view this fleeting world

A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream

A flash of lightning in a summer cloud

A flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream
